I’m 16 & my doctor said that he doesn’t like to prescribe sleep aids and that I should look at natural ones.
and these are the two I found.

my naturopath told me that melatonin can be good for emergency use, like if you’re a crazy insomniac and really need to sleep, but that it’s not good to take frequently because it messes with your hormones. she also said that valerian is good, but only if you’re not anxiety prone, as this can amplify your anxiety. if you don’t have probems with anxiety, you can drink it as a tea before bed, but you might want to mix it with other herbs since it tastes like wet hay.

here are some other good herbs for help with sleeping:

passion flower
lavender
scullcap
hopps
chamomile

you can make tea with any of these and they are sure to calm you down a bit

if that’s not enough, try counting down from 100 slowly, taking deep breaths for every number (i.e. breath in 100 breath out 99) while doing this imagine yourself in a beautiful place and focus on what you see, hear and smell there. when your mind tries to wander, imagine those thoughts as clouds, don’t fight them, just recognize their existence and let them float away.

having trouble sleeping could also be a sign that you’re not getting enough exercise. make sure you’re using your body each day and it will be a lot easier to fall asleep at night.

Ok so I have always had a problem falling asleep. I am 24 now and I have experienced this problem since the age of 14. Whenever this problem becomes chronic, I visit a psychiatrist and he prescribes a hypnotic. I take hypnotics only when I am not able to fall asleep after hours of trying. I usually take Zolpidem but to tell you the truth, even though I have such a problem I am actually against taking such drugs.

I am from India and from the past one year I have been trying to find a sleep aid which is relatively safe and isn’t addictive. Maybe something thats natural? I know in countries like US etc you get supplements like Melatonin, 5HTP, Valerian etc. But I can’t find any of these here in India.

So my only hope is someone out here who might know of a sleep aid available in India. I know there are millions of people here in India who suffer from insomnia so it would be just unfair to find out no body knows of any such thing that’s available here.

And why exactly aren’t products like 5HTP made available in India?

This is ironic because systems of medicines like Unani and Ayurvedic have there roots in India and all they believe in are products that are natural and organic. Yet natural, organic products like 5HTP, Melatonin aren’t available here?

Okay so… I’ve had insomnia for years. It’s on and off, isn’t ALL the time thank god. But I’ll go through weeks or months without sleeping more than a couple hours a night (if I’m lucky), balanced out with maybe a week in between where I manage to get decent amounts of sleep.

I’ve tried a ton of sleep aid pills already, as recommended by my doctor. Valerian. Melatonin. Nytol. Herbal Nytol. Kalms. None of them worked.

Eventually my doctor prescribed me a stronger sleeping pill called Zopiclone. But, no dice. It didn’t stop me from taking forever to get to sleep, it just made me feel more tired and get more frustrated that I still couldn’t sleep. And it didn’t stop me from waking up eight thousand times during the night, and then being unable to get BACK to sleep again. And on top of that it made me feel like I was hungover in the morning, all groggy and nauseous and dizzy feeling. I tried it for a while but stopped taking it about a year ago because it just wasn’t working. My doctor said there was no point in prescribing different sleeping pills, as it didn’t seem they were helping any way and it would be stupid just to put a ton of chemicals in my body without even getting a result.

This was about a year ago, but my problems are persisting. I’ve taken to sleeping with earplugs because I am a light sleeper, and this helps me marginally in that, I don’t wake up at every little sound. I just wake up when my body decides to instead.

But does anybody have some natural remedies that might work? Like, are chamomile tea and lavender baths before bed really supposed to work? I’m really jaded and sceptical now, but it’s been like three weeks since I got over 4 hours of sleep in one night, so I need your advice.

Thanks in advance you guys.

Something that isn’t pill based but is a natural alternative for sleeping problems is Sound Therapy. There is information about it at http://www.soundtherapyperth.com/benefits/sleep.php .

It’s a listening program that calms the brain and helps induce a deeper sleep – it uses classical music that has been specially filtered, that is turned down low so you don’t have to consciously listen to the music.

I’ve used Sound Therapy – I actually bought it for my tinnitus – and found that a very pleasant side effect was that it helped my sleeping within a couple of days of starting to use it.

I’m having trouble sleeping some nights. Sometimes I just cant quiet my thoughts. Any tips on some easy Natural Sleep Aids? Thanks.

Hey George.

Natural sleep aid’s are a lot more healthy for your body than artificial sleeping pills. Why? ‘Cause they’re natural, duh! Here are two easy tips for natural sleep aid.

Diet. If you eat too much sugars or stimulants such as caffeine, you’ll have trouble sleeping. Switch your diet to more leafy greens, wheats, almonds, cashews, and brewed yeasts.

Music. Whenever you have a racing mind, try and turn on some soothing and relaxing music to help you get to sleep.

These are just two simple natural sleep aids. Hope this helps!

I have Xanax and Lunesta which work well, but I don’t want to take them all the time.

I have Alteril which also works pretty well, too.

I’ve heard Valerian Root is effective. Any other suggestions?

This stuff works great for me. It is not habit forming and I don’t wake up feeling loopy in the morning like I do with other sleep aides.

i can’t sleep is there anything natural i can take or eat that’ll help me sleep

3 mg of Melatonin, which is already a substance in your body, take it 30 mins before sleep, and be sure to turn out the lights as it responds to light.

Works great!

i havent been sleeping well lately, and ive been really buisy so im always tired. what natural things would help me sleep?

Valerian root, skull cap and hops combination.
or
Skull cap and hops alone also work.
or
Melatonin really helps you get to sleep.
All available at health food stores or where supplements are sold.
None of these have after effects. No "drug hangover" feeling when they wear off.
Camomile tea or meditation before bed.
Pranayama breathing.
Sweet Dreams!

I have been having trouble falling asleep and I am looking for a natural sleep aid so I can go to sleep. I do not like worm milk and I have been taking Calcium and Magnesium but I after I take that when I wake up I feel sick. Is there anything that I can take?

Hi,

Yes I think just taking a good magnesium supplement on its own might be worth a try.
Also, cut back on stimulating foods such as chocolate, caffeine etc.

Try drinking some warm chamomile tea before bed & drop some Lavender Essential Oil on your pillow & also rub it into your temples – this is so soothing & has been proven to help insomniacs.

Good luck! x
