Basically if someone’s having trouble sleeping and they don’t want to take any sleepng pills or anything like that what is a good idea to help someone get to sleep?
Warm milk, a warm bath, then a massage. If they don’t fall asleep, they will still get rest, so it’s ok.
Well, you could knock them over the head with a hammer! Seriously, they may want to try taking Melatonin. Melatonin is what is produced naturally by the body to regulate out sleep/wake cycle. It’s not a sleeping pill. The person who can’t sleep should try this.

Try Melatonin. It’s not a drug. It’s a hormone that occurs naturally in the brain. You can buy it over the counter in most any drug store. Try a half tablet at first. If that doesn’t help, take a whole one. Avoid caffeine, which includes most soft drinks.

do you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep. do you even sleep at ngiht at all? i always had trouble getting to sleep and i did use the aid of pil every now and then, but i find that the best way to get sleep is to set up a very strict sleeping plan for yourself. do not watch tv or reading or do anything in your bed other than sleep. if confusing your brain and then it strats to associate your bed as a place of work and not a place of rest. try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. this will help set your internal clock and your body will feel more rested from a routine.
camomile tea is good to drink before bed too because it helps relax and put you to see naturally, if you can find a camomile bubble bath that’s even better, it will put you out pretty fast after a nice bath.
eat a lite snack, nothing heavy, before bed and if you eat dairy you can try a warm glass of milk which is suppose to really work (i don’t eat dairy so i’ve never tried it)
honestly, if none of this works you night have to see a doctor about it. you could try the herbal section at your local heath food store for anything else as a last resprt before sleeping pills.
hope this helps

Falling asleep naturally only occurs when the body is relaxed as well as the mind. Here are some natural "remedies":
Create a very relaxing evening starting from right after dinner. Light candles (bright lights keep people awake so candlelight is more relaxing), play soft music and give a massage, back, leg, foot, whatever. Helping the muscles relax is an easy way to help someone get to sleep at any age.
Prepare a WARM (NOT HOT) bath with bubbles and candles and soft music. Lying in a hot bath actually speeds up your heart rate and will make you feel more awake. The trick to using the bath to feel sleepy is to make it warm and comfortable so you can sink in immediately without feeling hot or cold, even if you like hot baths, they will not help you fall asleep. The candles and music, once again are to help your brain relax.
Tell a story, something non-exciting, to get the person’s mind off the workday and into a "dreamy" sort of state. Describe beaches or other places where people just lay around relaxing.
Warm milk may just be a psychological trigger that we associate with relaxing, but it can still work. Tea and other warm beverages (including hot chocolate) contain caffeine and this obviously is not what you want before bed.
Make sure the person doesn’t go to bed until they are sleepy enough to fall asleep. When people go to bed before they are tired and "toss and turn" for hours trying to fall asleep, they can create an association with the bed and NOT sleeping which can actually trigger insomnia. Staying in one room that has a relaxing atmosphere until you feel sleepy is much better then going to bed when you are not tired.
Basically removing any stress and helping the person stop worrying or thinking about external factors a few hours before bedtime as well as helping their bodies to physically relax is the best way to help them sleep.

Good question for a big problem..
Many people have trouble falling asleep and may not realize that they may be intolerant to caffeine and caffeine based products. You also may be consuming a lot of sugar which creates a mild high keeping you overactive and preventing sleep.
You would be very surprised that many processed foods contain high sugar (fructose) and caffeine, its not just colas and coffee.
Try the following:
1) limit your sugar and caffeine intake after 2:00 pm.
2) keep your room nice and cool at bedtime
3) try counting things (sheep, cities or places)
4) warm milk with NON SUGARED cereal
5) warm "sleepy time" tea
6) also clean fresh sheets can help also
Some of the other responders had some great ideas too. You may want to go to http://www.webmd.com and type in insomnia. (you will also get some great answers)
I also encounter sleep problems from time to time and with me it’s just a matter watching and changing my dietary habits and naturaly, breaking the cycle.
It only took a few days.
Good luck, hope this helps, happy sleeping …

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress,
dietary and medical problems. By making
small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly,
insomnia can be cured. I found the information
